MAINTENANCE ADVANTAGES AT DANISH WASTE WATER PLANT
The benefits of NOV Mono’s EZstrip technology have been dramatically highlighted by a new order from a Danish wastewater treatment plant. When sourcing pumps for a new sludge dewatering process, maintenance engineers at the Odense WWTP in Southern Denmark opted for 8 Mono EZstrip pumps and 16 of the company’s Compact C Range progressing cavity (pc) pumps.
The decision was based on the reduction in maintenance time the pumps offer, together with speed of delivery from Mono. The same advantages also led the plant’s engineers to specify Mono’s EZstrip and Compact C Range pumps for use on new polymer dosing equipment that was being ordered, rather than the competitor pumps which were offered as standard.
“When we were invited to tender for pumps on the sludge dewatering process, we took an EZstrip demonstration pump to the plant,” explains Product Manager Michael Roug, from AxFlow A/S, Mono’s distributor in Denmark who supplied the pumps. “We explained how the pump could be disassembled, de-ragged and maintained in-situ, all in a fraction of the time that process takes with a normal pc pump. Coupled with the fact that Mono was also very competitive in terms of cost and speed of delivery, this made it an easy decision for the maintenance engineers. The pumps were ordered in a variety of sizes for use on different parts of the dewatering process.
” Mono’s EZstrip technology represents the biggest advance in progressing cavity pump design for 30 years. The EZstrip pumps incorporate all the best aspects of Mono’s thoroughly proven Compact C Range pumps, but can dramatically reduce the time needed to replace a rotor, stator, coupling rod and drive train by up to 95%, cutting the typical day-long maintenance operation down to just 30 minutes. By simply removing a few screws, the suction chamber is easily dismantled, giving access to remove any rag build-up or replace parts, without disconnecting suction and discharge pipework.
The Compact C progressing cavity pumps are designed specifically to fit into compact spaces, whilst still delivering maximum performance. They offer such features as a good suction lift capability of over 8 metres, positive displacement to aid process control and variable speed performance for accurate dosing applications.
“The plant engineers were sufficiently impressed with the Mono pumps to specify their use on a new polymer dosing line that was being ordered for the plant,” adds Michael Roug. “The manufacturer normally uses pumps from another supplier for this type of equipment, but these were changed to the Mono pumps, again on the basis of the many advantages they offered. This resulted in a further order for two additional EZstrip pumps and two Compact C pumps.”

NEW API-COMPLIANT PROGRESSING CAVITY PUMPS FOR OIL AND GAS APPLICATIONS
Mono’s PC technology is ideally suited to the typically arduous applications found in this sector, where solids-entrained multiphase fluids such as drilling muds, drill cuttings and produced waters need to be transferred with a steady flow and low shear.
The new API 676 EZstrip™ pumps provide a practical, reliable and proven solution which helps prevent emulsification, while also resisting the effects of abrasion without gas locking. This makes them ideal for many types of oil, gas and mud handling duties in drilling, exploration, production, processing and separation operations.
The new pumps feature a long-coupled, full-size base frame design that incorporates a drip tray in accordance with the API 676 Third edition. Supplied complete with a mechanical seal to API 682 Category 1, the pumps also incorporate Mono’s revolutionary EZstrip™ technology which provides a quick and easy way to disassemble and fully maintain them in-situ. This can dramatically reduce the time needed to replace a rotor, stator, coupling rod and drive train by up to 95%.
The self-priming pumps can be manufactured from different materials to suit different applications, ranging from mild and stainless steel through to traceable and NACE-certified duplex steels. They are bi-directional, which allows them to be mounted horizontally or vertically, and the positive seal formed by the interference fit between rotor and stator makes them ideal for low net positive suction head applications.
The gentle action of the new pumps prevents the emulsification of oil and water mixtures such as reject oil or separator feeds. The low velocity of the fluid through the pump, and the low rubbing velocity of the metal rotor against the stator, ensures low rates of abrasion and wear, while rotors with specialist coatings can also be supplied to provide additional wear and corrosion resistance.
In addition to the many standard features which are offered by API 676 EZstrip pumps, are options such as dry run protection, ATEX and API 682 seal systems.
Mono can also offer a range of artificial lift technologies, including electric well head drives, plunger lift and API-certified sucker rod pumps. These are designed for use in enhanced oil recovery and de-liquification operations, on both conventional and unconventional gas wells.
Mono’s track record as a supplier of PC pumps to the oil and gas industry is reinforced by the creation of a new Oil and Gas office in the U.K. to provide dedicated industry expertise and support for customers, as well as its associations with parent company, National Oilwell Varco (NOV), which has been a world-leader in providing advanced technology solutions to this sector since 1841.

NOV MONO DELIVERS THIRD EZSTRIP CAKE PUMP TO MAJOR UK FOOD SUPPLIER
A major supplier of prepared vegetables to the UK food industry has recently taken delivery of another EZstrip™ cake pump from NOV Mono. Measham-based AB Produce trialed an EZstrip™ cake pump before installing its first unit a year ago, and the latest pump is the third that the company has ordered.
AB Produce supplies a wide range of potatoes and prepared vegetable to customers in the food wholesale, retail, catering and processing sectors. The company had previously used a system of screw augers, steel collection bins, macerators and pumps to collect and process vegetable peelings before transferring them on to an on-site treatment plant. “However we were having problems with this,” comments AB Produce spokesman Carl Woolrich. “The physical location of the system, only a little way off the floor, meant that there was very little head of waste forcing its way into the macerators. The system was basically relying on the original pumps below to draw the waste slurry down into the macerators and this was resulting in blockages.”
“When we began looking for an alternative solution, we realized that the EZstrip™ cake pump offered some very attractive advantages. Mono™ could provide the pump with a modified inlet blending flange and auger which helps convey the vegetable waste product into the pump. This greatly increased the flow of slurry through the macerators and into the pump.
“The first unit we tested performed extremely well and had a capacity of 4-5m3/h. It allowed us to replace the previous auger, bin and pump combination with a single, compact alternative. The Mono pumps operate very well indeed and we’ve been happy to order more to help eliminate the problems that we had previously.”
Each of the pumps supplied to AB Produce features a widethroat hopper and a modified inlet blending flange, to ensure efficient collection and pumping of the vegetable slurry at a rate of 4-5m3/h.

Following its recent acquisition of the Robbins and Myers business, NOV Mono has announced plans to increase its penetration of the European market.
“Europe offers enormous potential for the various products in our newly extended portfolio, and we are expanding our teams and our capabilities so that we can exploit that potential to the full,” says European Sales Manager, Ian Horton.
Ian cites Germany as a good example of this programme in action. “We have already expanded our presence in Germany with the aim of increasing the level of service we provide to our customers there. This includes appointing new Area Sales Managers, and signing new commercial agreements with independent distributors such as Walter Fiedler and Würdig Pumpentechnik, who now represent us in separate areas of the German water and wastewater market. However we are not finished yet. We’re currently recruiting to expand our sales force in Germany and other territories with a view to providing our customers with even better support.”
Mono has also been developing its offering to European customers in other ways, including changes to the supply chain for its range of Mono Universal Parts in France. This move has further improved turnaround times and helped to reduce equipment downtime and customer spares inventories. Mono customers in the French water and waste water industries now also benefit from the supply of the company’s EZstrip products via the NOV Mono France office. “The range includes the EZstrip Transfer Pump, EZstrip Cake Pump and the EZstrip TR Muncher,” adds Ian. “Our aim is to make it even easier for our French customers to access the wealth of expertise and industry experience that lies behind both the EZstrip range and the Mono business as a whole.”
On a wider scale, Mono’s new global structure offers an increased range of products and services to its European customers. These include progressing cavity pumps, grinders, screens, mixers and a variety of other associated technologies designed to meet the needs of the world’s process industries. “We now offer our customers the benefits of a team which can support them no matter where they are in Europe, or what their requirements are, “ adds Ian. “We are a truly global business and can provide the highest quality products, technology, services and solutions that our customers can rely on, and while we’ve made an excellent start on delivering that new offering there is much work to be done in the future.”
